ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The young media team returned home after 2.5 months on the R&B Tour with Usher, now hired on to continue working.ย

Last week, Atlanta young media professionals from Usherโ€™s New Look, in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit, gathered to publicly chat about their tour experiences as interns. They completed a rigorous 21-day bootcamp to endure 2.5 months of high-energy live entertainment.

โ€œOn this tour, Iโ€™ve been doing a lot of behind the scenes, like mic packs and running cables under the stage,โ€ said Sarah Swift, audio production intern for Usherโ€™s New Look. โ€œThis has given the opportunity to let young people in the industry and give them a chance,โ€ she added.

This youth initiative, through Usherโ€™s New Look, has been grooving for over 25 years, and introduced many students to the music and entertainment industry. The R&B Tour was a first-of-its-kind opportunity to launch the term โ€œinternshipโ€ to another level.

The 18-day stadium tour put Sarah, Miโ€™Cai, Storm, and their teammates in hands-on situations across production, multimedia, operations, and wardrobe departments.

โ€œThis is where these young interns really could go behind the scenes and work to understand what itโ€™s like, said Shawn H. Wilson, Co-Founder of Usherโ€™s New Look and President & CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit.

โ€œThis is real world experience,โ€ he concluded.

After the tour ended, the interns accepted employment offers and will continue working though a new partnership with BET Next Gen.

This inaugural effort reeled in 1600 applicants who had, then, already exhibited interest and/or previous experience with production, were of high interest for the program. The selection process included members who may have worked with the students in the year prior.

โ€œItโ€™s really important for us to design this as a true experience, said Wilson. โ€œWhen we went through those applications, we looked for the fans, and we weeded them out because we wanted to find the individuals who were passionate about the entertainment trade, going to school, or working in the trade. We wanted to make sure that we found the young people that, this experience, would literally catapult their career,โ€ he added.

โ€œTo see these young adults come in hungry, thirsty, and even nervous to go through this process was phenomenal,โ€ said Amia Mize, partnering contributor.

Usher’s Laboratory has a very nice ring to it.

‘Spark Lab’, in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, is a youth development and engagement effort that sprouted from Usher Raymond IV’s Social Impact Tour. This tour, which kicked off last August in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the After School Alliance, has reached over 4,800 youth across 11 cities including Washington, D.C.; Detroit, MI; Philadelphia, PA; Oakland, CA, Houston, TX, Brooklyn, NY and more.ย

“โ€‹The Spark Lab and Entertainment Industry Club is about providing our youth with the tools, confidence, and opportunities they need to turn their dreams into reality,” said Usher Raymond IV, Chairman of Usher’s New Look. “It’s an honor to help inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators. We are invested in our future. We’re invested in youth and I’m an example,” he added.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the 25-year legacy of USHERโ€™s New Look and its unwavering dedication to transforming the lives of under-resourced youth through comprehensive, passion-driven leadership programs. With the Entertainment Industry Club set to launch in 2025, this initiative reaffirms USHERโ€™s ongoing commitment to creating brighter futures for young people nationwide.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta is thrilled to announce this yearโ€™s much-anticipated launch of the Usher Raymond IV Spark Lab,” said David Jernigan, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta.

“Usherโ€™s Spark Lab will not only be a resource to our Club members, but also a space where they can gain hands-on experiences in fields like music production, filmmaking, photography, and more. This initiative perfectly aligns with our mission to ignite the unlimited potential of kids and teens by creating safe, inclusive, and engaging environments, empowering them to find their spark and pursue their passions.”
