Ga Southern Eagles: The offensive struggle is real

The message is in the title, ladies and gentlemen.

I have made a point to keep an eye on my Eagles, since I left campus in 2013. I try to keep an unbiased perspective on the team’s performance, so I will say this…Since the Eagles moved into the Sun Belt Conference, they have really struggled to keep that strong, southern momentum that made them great years ago. So what happened? Could it have been Monken’s move to GA Tech? Losing key players, like McKinnon and Wilcox ,to the NFL? Could be a number of factors, to be honest.

BUT let me tell you what I see, and have always seen since my football editor days. I see a football program who has failed to fix their weaknesses behind the ball. The main weakness is at the lead position, quarterback!

Don’t get me wrong, the quarterbacks themselves aren’t the problem, maybe, but offense definitely needs to migrate to a more passing offense. It’s always been a “Georgia Southern Characteristic” to have a strong rushing offense. That’s all fine and dandy, but without having a well balanced offense, the Eagles and their football program, unfortunately, won’t get too far.

Game ending stats weren’t of my surprise. It was actually a dead giveaway to why the Eagles took home the “L” and should have sent a CLEAR message to the entire football program. Take a look and tell me what you see.

The Eagles have always used the option run and scouted talented runners, but what they need is to develop a much stronger passing game. How else will they dominate their division and tackle more challenging schools? (no pun intended)

World Series 2016’s most valuable piece of history

By Jannah Bolds

It’s been 108 years since the Chicago Cubs have seen World Series lights, and yesterday in Game 7, the Cubs broke a streak that seemed to have lifted a century-long curse.

But I’m not here to talk about what everyone else’s headlines say. Of course we know who won the series, but there is something that might be more valuable that came from yesterday’s event that still exists today, and will forever; the game ball.

Apparently game balls are very important pieces of history. (As I reflect on the iconic baseball movie, The Sandlot, where Benny ‘The Jet’ Rodriguez hopped that fence for a Babe Ruth autographed ball. lol) So, did you catch where this year’s game ball went after that last out?

Let’s see if you can spot it in the video!

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOp8w2PgHlM

Yup, you saw right! Cubs’ infielder Anthony Rizzo pocketed that puppy! Can you blame him? What would you do?

If you understand the gravity of those exact moments, what do you think could come from this? This was the World Series guys. The last time Chicago got to this level was in 1945 against the Detroit Tigers, and lost. Events like these are once in a life time opportunities. Let that sink in.

So let’s say that he DID, in fact, keep the ball for himself. That would be a token to keep in the family FOREEEVVERRRRRR! (another sandlot reference)

Actual game balls don’t resurface often. A ball used in last year’s world series, between the Royals and Mets is still up for sale on MLBshop.com for $1,499.99. Not the game ending ball, just one of the many balls played that day; just one. Autographed memorabilia balls from this year are being sold online too. I spotted one for a cool $3,000 … with free shipping lol.

Seats at this game were even priced between $250 – $10,000, according to an on-air report from StubHub during the last inning of the game. Seats behind Chicago’s dugout were fetching way way more than that! StubHub recorded a sale of two tickets for $23,402 each. E.A.C.H! WTF lol The sale coming from someone in the Chicago area.

I guess a once in a life time opportunities yield once in a life time experiences and prices eh?

The Long Path to the NBA

On September 24th The Bold Opinion Crew had the privilege of interviewing NBA prospect Chris Horton. After the interview we applauded his gumption to approach the tough path of the NBA. We promised to follow his success, as we knew his journey was nowhere near complete.

Yesterday, October 30, 2016 the OVC Tournament MVP was drafted into the development league for the NBA. He was picked 5th in the first round by the Grand Rapids Drive. “It felt great knowing I was drafted because all the waiting and hard work paid off,” said the 6’8 powerhouse from Austin Peay.

The Grand Rapids Drive is a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Pistons based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Horton has traveled to many cities for training and work out purposes, Grand Rapids will be one of his many new destinations. When asked if he was happy with the outcome to play in the D-League rather than going overseas, he humbly replied, “I’m just happy to be playing basketball again, didn’t matter where I went.”

We will continue to follow Chris Horton on the treacherous journey to the NBA. The Bold Opinion Crew wishes Chris and the Grand Rapids Drive the best for their upcoming season.
